Modular Furniture Platform System
Parametric Architecture, Multi-Retailer Engineering & Shared Carcass Design

Engineering one internal product platform: a standardized carcass, drawer runner spacing, hardware families, and packaging logic: with a controlled parametric pilot family offering width options from 1000mm to 2200mm, so the manufacturer could serve multiple competing retailers from a single manufacturing foundation.
01. The Problem
A high-volume case goods manufacturer was designing a new, unrelated product from scratch for every retail account: multiplying tooling costs, sample cycles, and inventory complexity with each new customer relationship. The economics of the business only made sense if it could find a way to serve more customers without proportionally more engineering work.
02. Strategic Logic & Engineering Decisions
We engineered one internal product platform: a standardized carcass, drawer runner spacing, hardware families, and flat-pack packaging logic: and confined all customer-facing differentiation to the visible layer: doors, drawer fronts, leg styles, materials, and finishes. A single parametric pilot family was introduced first, offering controlled width flexibility from 1000mm to 2200mm and door-to-drawer ratios of 100/0, 50/50, or 0/100, held inside fixed manufacturing constraints so the options remained real rather than aspirational. The same manufacturing platform now supports multiple retailer-facing identities without duplicating the underlying engineering.
03. Shared Platform, Variable Expression
Standardization behind the scenes unlocks manufacturing scale while preserving front-end design differentiation:
- Shared (fixed): carcass dimensions, drawer runner spacing, hardware families, and packaging logic stay constant across every customer program.
- Variable (customer-facing): doors, drawer fronts, headboards, legs, handles, and finishes change to fit each retailer's brand.
- Parametric pilot: one family with width scaling from 1000mm to 2200mm, storage mixes of drawers / doors / open, door-to-drawer ratios of 100/0, 50/50, or 0/100, and leg styles in wood, metal, or frame.
- Finish options available across all programs: oak, walnut, black, and painted: consistent supply chain, different brand stories.
- A new retailer account no longer requires restarting design, sourcing, or engineering from zero.

05. Assortment Architecture
Core Carcass Platform
Standardized internal structural frames, drawer runner spacing, and hardware mounting: the fixed layer that everything else builds on.
Retailer Expression A (Lead Account)
Warm oak tones, soft minimal detailing, and contemporary proportions: designed to the lead retailer's confirmed aesthetic brief.
Retailer Expression B
Black or dark wood finishes, stronger graphic contrast, and slim metal legs: a distinct identity from the same internal carcass.
Retailer Expression C
Lighter silhouettes, rounded detailing, and an alternative door pattern: a third market-ready story without new tooling.
06. Commercial Outcome & Strategic Impact
- Lower development cost and faster launch timelines from shared tooling and sourcing leverage: new retailer accounts don't restart engineering.
- More efficient production and reduced inventory complexity across accounts, because the carcass and core components are shared.
- A parametric pilot that gave buyers controlled flexibility without full bespoke development: 'good for customers who want controlled options, built within fixed manufacturing constraints.'
- Different on the outside. Standardized on the inside. Economies of scale through common architecture.
